Lighthouse Stories from Benguela Cove - Hermanus

03 October 2022

  • Penny Streeter OBE and Tim Atkin

Spring is in full swing and with the seasons changing the team at Benguela Cove reached for the stars.

The season is slowly but surely unfolding as the tourism industry is returning to full swing. It was all hands-on deck for the vineyard team; the race was on to prune our vineyards before the new shoots appear.  These bare stumps will be bearing the new vintages in the coming months. Awards season also brought a few nice surprises, and Chef Annie is pulling out all the stops for the new Spring Menu.

Benguela Cove Wine Estate was a standout performer in UK writer and Master of Wine, Tim Atkin's 10th annual South Africa Special Report.

The estate won the best Cellar Door Experience of the Year award and Medals of Excellence for all of its ten wine entries, with each wine achieving 90 or more points out of 100 for the second consecutive year.

“We're delighted to be selected for the top award from so many outstanding cellar door experiences in South Africa, and it recognises our commitment to ecotourism and the environment, as well as superb wines. Benguela is a unique destination, set in the UNESCO designated Kogelberg Biosphere; it's at the lowest height, at sea level, and with the longest seaboard of any vineyard in the world - Penny Streeter OBE

When owner, Penny Streeter OBE, opened the state-of-the-art winery in 2017 the dream was to create a world-class wine producer and hospitality venue. Now, Benguela Cove is recognised as the Best Cellar Door Experience. High praise indeed, considering the 433 outstanding wineries considered for the honour.

The Benguela Cove wine collection reached new hights and really stood out to the judges this year during the Michelangelo-, Winemag- and Vitis Vinifera Wine Awards.
