Vergenoegd Löw named among the World's Top 100 sustainable Hotels & Resorts
28 April 2026
As Vergenoegd Löw marks 330 years of intentional stewardship this June, the historic Stellenbosch estate has earned global recognition as one of the Top 100 Sustainable Hotels and Resorts of the World, honoured by the International Sustainability Awards for what judges describe as “advancing a holistic model of regenerative hospitality.”
The accolade places one of South Africa’s oldest working farms among the world’s leading examples of environmentally conscious luxury farm travel, recognised for seamlessly integrating heritage preservation, ecological regeneration, and deeply meaningful guest experiences.
“This recognition affirms our belief that true luxury lies in authenticity, responsibility, and a profound respect for place,” says Corius Visser, managing director of Vergenoegd Löw. “For us, sustainability is not an added philosophy, but the foundation of how we honour the land’s 330-year legacy while shaping its future for generations to come.”
The awards panel further noted: “In an era where environmental responsibility is evolving rapidly, Vergenoegd Löw demonstrates how heritage, ecology, and meaningful guest experiences can thrive as one cohesive offering.”
Visser adds: “What we are increasingly seeing is that the growth of luxury farm-based hospitality is being shaped by a desire for calm, restorative and regenerative stays on working farms, where exceptional local wine and culinary culture are matched by visible care for the land and its heritage. Today’s travellers are drawn to deeper cultural connection and wellness rather than ostentation, while each subtle shift in season creates new opportunities for activities and experiences.”
At the gateway to the Stellenbosch Winelands, the 160ha mixed-farming estate invites discerning travellers, lovers of culture, and champions of sustainable regenerative agriculture into the living story of one of South Africa’s most remarkable heritage destinations.
Boasting an award-winning winery and two reimagined top restaurants, one scheduled to reopen in October this year, conceived by gastronomist Michelle Theron, Vergenoegd Löw offers a premier collection of individually appointed, ultra-luxury suites, each with its own spa bath or heated swimming pool.
Guests are treated to floor-to-ceiling views of the vineyards or mountains, complimentary wine tastings, and the opportunity to view commissioned artworks by renowned local artists, including Dylan Lewis and Manuela Holzer. They can luxuriate in the health and treatment spa, stroll through indigenous gardens, watch local aquatic birdlife catch the wind, and explore the labyrinth or puzzle maze.
The heritage establishment, a member of the exclusive The European Heritage Project portfolio of hotels, features several prime examples of finely restored 18th-century classical Cape Dutch architecture, collectively declared a National Monument in 1974.
Vergenoegd Löw is also a WWF Conservation Champion, recognised for its regenerative agricultural endeavours and the restoration of land corridors to indigenous habitat, efforts that have been underway since 2015.
This global recognition arrives at a defining moment in the estate’s 330-year journey, affirming Vergenoegd Löw’s place at the forefront of heritage-led regenerative luxury farm travel.
