  • Introducing Makoto Craft Sake: Japanese Brewing Heritage with a South African Soul

Bringing together centuries of Japanese brewing tradition and the creativity of the African continent, Makoto is introducing traditional Japanese craft sake with a distinctly South African soul.

Founded by South African beverage strategist Annelize Morkel and Japanese entrepreneur Kanatsu Sasaki, Makoto aims to bridge cultures through a drink that has been cherished in Japan for more than a thousand years. Its name reflects the Japanese values of honesty, sincerity and authenticity – principles at the heart of the brand.

The inspiration began when Sasaki first visited South Africa. Captivated by the country's natural beauty and the warmth of its people, she envisioned a way to connect Japan and Africa through craft sake. In Morkel, a lifelong student of Japanese culture and martial arts, she found a like-minded partner whose career has centred on creating memorable experiences across the food, wine and tourism sectors.

“Makoto was written in our stars. We wanted to create something that is authentic, real and deeply personal – intentionally bringing different cultures together to honour and celebrate the best of both,” says Morkel.

For Sasaki, the venture reflects the power of shared experiences to bring people and cultures closer together.

“Japan and Africa share a deep respect for craftsmanship and community. Makoto is where those worlds meet, and we are excited to share our journey,” she says.

After years of exploration, the founders had the opportunity to collaborate with an 18th-generation sake brewer to develop a distinctive offering. Combining carefully selected ingredients with Japanese brewing expertise, the project embraces innovation while remaining rooted in a pursuit of quality and excellence.

The result is what the founders call “The Makoto Way” – a meeting of Japanese precision and Africa's dynamic spirit, expressed through a contemporary interpretation of a time-honoured craft.

Makoto's sake range is available at selected high-end restaurants, offering diners a new way to explore Japanese brewing heritage through an African-inspired lens.
