"Food can combat cold." - A Love Letter from Danny and the Team at Ladles of Love
26 June 2025
It’s bitterly cold all over the country and in Cape Town it’s raining up a storm. As we head into July, we realise there is a long winter ahead of us and it’s going to be tough on people living in poverty-stricken areas prone to flooding and fires.
The most vulnerable are the little ones in informal settlements who are left to fend for themselves navigating deep ditches of waters, hunger at home and harmful people who hover and prey, having lost their way.
This is why we are on a mission to onboard more preschools this winter to ensure small children in underserved communities receive the nutrition they need at their places of shelter. It’s hard to even imagine having no food at home and hoping there is enough at school to go around.
When you’re freezing cold to your bones you can’t feel or move. Eating a hot bowl of food, means with each mouthful you feel the warmth seep through your body restoring feeling even down to your toes. This is the power of food, especially wholesome meals loaded with veggies to fuel your body and mind. It is heartbreaking that small children, literally toddlers are battling both hunger and cold.
Often people say: “Danny, how do you and your team do what you do and deal with seeing so much poverty and sadness?” The truth is, seeing the life-changing impact of nutritious food on children is unbelievable and this is our WHY. Our frustrations and helplessness are the limitations of our funding.
The truth is, we have the ability and capabilities to roll out our Nourish Our Children programme to double the preschool women and children – we simply don’t have the money! This is why projects like Mandela Day are so imperative, as this is our big shot annually at raising funds, food, and items to sustain and grow our programme.
If you’re wondering what you can do to help. Please roll up your sleeves and volunteer with us on Mandela Day. Round up your friends, family, and colleagues – buy tickets and make 18 July a ‘Feel-good Friday’ at DHL Stadium and Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.
For every R250 ticket sold – we can feed a small child two healthy meals a day for a month. Plus, by giving your time for two-hours means you will make, create, craft or grow between 2 - 10 meaningful items to nourish, nurture and grow little kids in need.
Together let’s create a brighter and better South Africa for all our children!
With gratitude and appreciation,
Danny and the team at Ladles of Love
