The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel & Spa to Transform The Conservatory Restaurant and Guest Lounge Interiors

19 May 2023

The Conservatory Restaurant at the Cellars-Hohenort Hotel & Spa in Cape Town will receive a complete transformation over the coming months and is set to re-launch with a contemporary new look and feel in Spring (2023). The redesign will include new décor and interiors of the hotel guest lounge and bar area, as well as the restaurant terrace of the historical Cellars building.

The hotel will remain open throughout the remodelling project, during which all food and beverage service will be moved to the Greenhouse venue in the adjacent Hohenort building.

Dawn Dickerson and Carmel Naudé of HotCocoa Interiors and Design have been tasked with the redesign of the restaurant, guest lounge and bar area. One of the main features of The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel & Spa is its breath-taking gardens that spread across nine acres at the foothills of Table Mountain, close to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. The new design will be centred around this unique feature to ‘bring the gardens into the interiors’ of the hotel.

Part of The Liz McGrath Collection, the hotel grounds have a rich history that dates back more than 300 years when Governor Simon van der Stel awarded the property ‘Klaasenbosch’ to his physician. Here Hendrik ten Damme built a simple house in the true Cape style with a wine cellar, grain mill and a wagon house. Today, these original buildings are still part of the property, having been restored and transformed into hotel rooms and suites. In 1991 the late Liz McGrath purchased what was then the sole Cellars building and went on to restore its historical beauty and develop it into the 5-star hotel it is today, as member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
