Once, footsteps echoed along the tracks of Gillitts Railway Station — journeys to the front during the Anglo-Boer War, and quiet returns carrying those forever changed by what they had witnessed. Then, as the years passed, the station fell silent, wrapped in the early morning mist and the memories of another time.

Today, the station has found a new rhythm.

Mist at Gillitts Station is a beautifully reimagined dining destination in the historic, restored railway station near Kloof in KwaZulu-Natal, where heritage, travel and African gastronomy come together in an immersive experience.

Inspired by the great railway stations and journeys of Africa, Mist invites diners to travel through the continent without leaving their table. The restaurant's design evokes the sensation of a train pulling into a station, while its cuisine takes guests on a sensory journey through the diverse landscapes, cultures, spices and traditions of Africa.

At the heart of the experience are five curated Journeys — immersive, multi-course tasting menus inspired by South Africa, Cameroon, Senegal, Tanzania and Morocco. Each Journey represents a different destination along the tracks, with dishes shaped by the region's flavours, techniques and stories.

From the culinary richness of South Africa to the spice-laced heritage of North Africa, every plate becomes a destination — carrying stories of land, culture and movement.

It is a continuation of the journeys that once crossed these very tracks, reinterpreted through a contemporary African culinary lens.

The experience extends beyond the food. There is something inherently atmospheric about dining in a historic railway station, where the past remains present in the architecture and surroundings while the restaurant looks firmly towards the future.

Mist has a new rhythm by day and by night.

Lunch is served daily from 12:00 to 16:00, featuring an à la carte selection and specially curated Chef's Specials.

As evening falls, the journey continues with dinner from 18:00 to 00:00.
