Mondiall Celebrates 3 Years of Success and a New Summer Menu
01 December 2016
Mondiall, the popular V&A Waterfront (Cape Town) restaurant is celebrating its third birthday this month (November 2016) with the launch of an exciting new Summer Menu curated by talented Head Chef, Stephen Mandes.
Winner of the ‘Ultimate Braai Master’ in 2014 (season 3), Chef Mandes (28) took up the reigns at Mondiall earlier this year (2016). Before that he clocked up extensive experience as chef proprietor of La Vierge Restaurant outside Hermanus. He started his career working in some of Cape Town’s top kitchens, including at the Cape Grace Hotel, the Belmond Mount Nelson, and De Grendel Restaurant, after he completed an Advanced Diploma in Culinary Arts.
Mandes describes the new summer menu as: ‘An infusion of international culinary concepts to satisfy the curious palate. I love creating delicious food, but never stick to one template only. My focus is to use top quality produce to create healthy, flavoursome and visually stimulating meals to satisfy both South African and international tastes.’
New on the Summer Menu are dishes ranging from Seafood Ceviche with fresh sweetcorn salsa and crisp taco; and Prawn & Leek Roulade with lentil salad, sugar snap peas and lime aioli; to Spice Crusted Seared Tuna with romesco sauce, crushed new potatoes and gremolata; and Organic Lamb Duo of loin and braised lamb neck served with shaved vegetables and minted jus; ending off on a sweet note with Nutella Cheesecake with honeycomb and berries.
An expert in ‘cooking over coals’, Mandes uses ‘Green Eggs’ in the Mondiall kitchen to create enticing smoked flavours. His menu incorporates influences from all over the world, as he takes the diner on an adventure to explore the best each cooking style has to offer, from Europe to Asia and crossing over to America. A singular dish can therefore be ‘well-travelled’ - incorporating elements such as apple puree (German) and kimchi (Korean) into the American style Smoked Pork Belly, another new dish on the menu.
He says he draws inspiration from Mediterranean cuisine, but also enjoys revisiting food memories from his childhood, using modern culinary skills to recreate timeless classics presented in a fresh, contemporary way. The new menu therefore offers many plays on proudly South African traditions such as ‘tea and biscuits’ served as a Rooibos & Honey infused Créme Brûlée with peach textures and shortbread fingers; and a deconstructed Lime Meringue with coconut, almond and fresh strawberries.
Mondiall offers diners an all-round quality experience, ranging from the variety on the menu, to the sophisticated décor and majestic view of Table Mountain and the harbour. Its modern Brasserie style setting perfectly captures the essence of Cape Town through warm and welcoming service, a touch of elegance and a truly global atmosphere, where local and international guests mingle and enjoy the restaurant as a home-away-from-home. Says owner Patrick Symington: ‘We have witnessed the growth of the Mondiall brand and our progress during three short years of trade, and are proud of our 4-star TripAdvisor rating. It remains our vision to offer a sophisticated, yet casual experience of refined comfort food’.
Over the past three years Mondiall has hosted a variety of events such as ‘The Pink Table Project’ in support of cancer, and various corporate celebrations and media events illustrating the versatility of the space and menu. Small-scale changes in décor have been made recently, which include atmospheric lighting, further wood and greenery placement and inclusion of other organic elements, as well as a couple of rustic ‘modern-farmhouse’ tables. The Terrace bar is currently under construction to create a lounge cocktail area separate to the main dining area, which incorporates new white marble detail for a ‘summer social’ component to the Mondiall dining experience.
Thus, Mondiall offers various elements on the menu, but also various menus for different occasions to meet the needs of each guest. Breakfast is served (10:00 - 11:30) Monday to Friday and features classics such as the lauded Eggs Benedict. Lunch is served (12:00 - 16:00) accompanied by the Bar Menu (11:00 - 22:00), which features the full spectrum of the newly launched summer menu daily. This is followed by Happy Hour (where all cocktails and selected craft beers are offered at a 50% discount), as well as the Afternoon menu which highlights the Mondiall Signature Dishes namely – Mondiall’s Signature Fish Tacos and Mondiall’s Famous 100% Wagyu Cheese Burger. Dinner takes place in the evening (18:30 - 22:00) and Brunch is available over weekends (10:00 – 16:00 Sat & Sun), featuring the ultimate Fluffy American Style Pancakes.
Offering a wide range of choice, the wine list features a variety of cultivars and vintages, consisting predominantly of South Africa’s top wine labels that are exclusively selected to ensure that the cuisine is complemented by the best quality wines. Juices and cocktails are popular too, including the Mondiall’s Iced Tea containing grapefruit, chai puree, lemon and litchi juice, and the Smoked Margarita with tequila, citronge, lime juice and uniquely smoked Malden salt as signature cocktail - perfect as sundowner to toast the summer season.
