An evening with Antjie Krog at the Vineyard Hotel
12 October 2017
Join the Vineyard Hotel for an intimate reading by respected author Antjie Krog from her epic Lady Anne: A Chronicle in Verse, published in 1989, winner of the Hertzog Prize in 1990 and recently translated into English.
“In the 1980s, experiencing a writer’s block fostered by a political situation she felt she could not write about directly, Antjie Krog chose Lady Anne Barnard as the subject for an epic poem in which she intended to confront ‘white privilege and … frivolousness’. Instead, a much more complex relationship evolved between the bard and her Lady. Though sometimes at one another’s throats, the two writers from different centuries share much in common, not least ‘the impossible possibility of writing honestly … about anything in this Country of Good Hope’.” – UCT Summer School.
Lady Anne Barnard and her husband, Colonial Secretary Andrew Barnard, built the Vineyard in 1799. Lady Anne’s letters and diaries are intriguing windows to life at the Cape as experienced by an intelligent, privileged, temporary visitor.
Antjie Krog has been an extraordinary Professor of Literature and Philosophy at the University of the Western Cape since 2004. She is a prolific author, poet and translator. Three award-winning anthologies of poetry preceded Lady Anne. Following its publication, Krog reported on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings from 1996 to 1998, which informed Country of My Skull, winner of the Alan Paton Award and Olive Schreiner Prize. Her further work, including San translations, has been published to great acclaim.
