When it comes to legends associated with The Oyster Box, one of its finest gems is the celebrated Grill Room Restaurant. Another is Hendry Pakiri, who has worked at the hotel for 50 years and still oversees this elegant dining room as Maître ‘d.
With a history stretching back almost 60 years, The Grill Room has always been the epitome of style and fine dining in Durban.
The restaurant hosts a Dinner & Dance on Saturday evenings. Dance the night away to the sounds of a live band. Bookings are strongly advised.
Under the leadership of executive chef, Kevin Joseph, the menu is an inspired combination of enduringly popular dishes, created by Bea Tollman, president and founder of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, Signature Dishes and contemporary new creations garnered from around the world.
Based on a tradition of beautiful food served and enjoyed in a refined setting, diners are served from our authentic Gueridon and the classic 1920’s Hors d’ Oeuvres trolley with an extensive range of 18 appetizers.

Award-winning executive chef, Kevin Joseph started his career in the South African Navy where he received his basic chef training and since then has accumulated a wealth of hands-on experience at leading hotels in South Africa and around the world. These include The Peninsula Hotel in Cape Town, the Raffles Hotel in Singapore and the Michelin-starred ‘Tamarind’ and ‘Claridges’ Restaurants in London.
He has spent the invaluable time in various hotels within the Red Carnation Hotels Collection including The Milestone and Summer Lodge Hotels in London, both with AA Rosette award-winning restaurants, and within South Africa’s Red Carnation portfolio, the international award winning Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat and the Twelve Apostles in Cape Town.
Kevin is a member of the South African Chef’s Association and the International Wine and Food Society. He is the current chairman of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) branch and was recently awarded a prestigious Blazon by the Chaîne.

For a more intimate dining experience, the Wine Cellar, with its glass ceiling, is sunken just below the Oyster Bar and is unique for dinner parties, corporate functions, tastings or special events.
Bespoke menus are created for every occasion and the resident Sommelier will present a selection of wines from the Diners Club Diamond award-winning wine list, which boasts the finest selection of South African and international vintages.

If you're a foodie looking for something a little out of the ordinary for an event or occasion, or you’d like to impress that very important client…why not join Executive Chef Kevin Joseph and his talented team for a unique dining experience.
The evening begins in the Oyster Bar enjoying Champagne and canapés, before you are taken into the kitchen for a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the working kitchen. Be part of the drama, as the chefs prepare a delicious 5-course menu, for between six and 10 guests, before your eyes.
This unique dining experience is available to book from Monday to Sunday for dinner. Three delicious 5-course dinner menu options are available for selection at R950.00 per person.
