La Colombe’s Luke Dale-Roberts ups the ante at sibling restaurant River Café on the Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate.
Situated at the entrance to the renowned Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate, the River Café has long been a popular social haunt in the Constantia valley and is well-known for its’ sumptuous breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas in a peaceful and picturesque setting. This popular meeting spot is currently undergoing a re-awakening by none other than Luke Dale-Roberts, executive chef of the recently crowned 2009 Eat Out Restaurant of the Year - La Colombe. Ever the team player, Luke is the first to say that he is nothing without the brigade of talented and passionate chefs who join him on a daily quest for seasonally inspired gourmet excellence and has appointed his protégé, Scot Kirton, as the Head Chef of the new River Cafe.
“Scot has established himself successfully in the industry, from his time with Matthew Gordon at Haute Cabrière to the kitchens of Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing, and has proven himself by working alongside me at La Colombe. We share similar ideas, goals, passions and dreams, which is why there was no other person perfectly fitted for this exciting challenge”, says Luke, of his colleague and friend.
Since Luke’s inception as Executive Chef of La Colombe three years ago, he has garnered immense praise from both local and international food lovers and has taken this iconic restaurant to new culinary heights. Under Luke’s direction, La Colombe has achieved a number of awards, including Chef of the Year and Restaurant of the Year in the Prudential Eat Out Awards 2008 and receiving the title of Restaurant of the Year for a second time in 2009; being voted as one of the top 50 restaurants in the world by the San Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants Awards 2009 and achieving the highest three star rating in both the 2009 and 2010 issues of the acclaimed Rossouw’s Restaurants guide.
As befits its laidback persona, the revitalised River Café will offer an authentic and affordable bistro-style dining experience, using only the freshest local ingredients, sourcing wines from the Constantia valley and serving up plates of wholesome, satisfying fare with a sophisticated country feel. The menu will change daily allowing diners to experience a wide variety of dishes that reflect the best seasonal offerings Scot is able to source.
He will be working closely with Horticulturalist, Boyd Hutchins, to develop an organic garden allowing them to grow their own fresh herbs and vegetables for their ever-changing culinary creations. They will also be embarking on an exciting project to smoke their own produce, from salmon to meats and cheeses and will be sourcing artisan baked breads and top quality coffee.
“Our aim is to provide authentic and always tasty offerings at any time of the day, whether it’s simply a good, strong espresso on the run, a luscious lunchtime salad for lunch made with produce picked that morning or early evening tapas and drinks, our goal is to be that spot where you know you’ll always find something absolutely delicious made with excellent ingredients”, says Scot.
Whether it’s for breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks or dinner - with its casual ambience, pristine location and friendly service - the River Café is the place to be this summer!

Winter Specials at Constantia Uitsig Estate
WONDERFUL WINTER NEWS
As the last days of a magical Cape Town summer begin to fade, foodies can look forward to wonderful Winter Menus at Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate, one of the city’s leading gourmet destinations. The spotlight will certainly be on Cape Town for the FIFA World Cup 2010, with hotels and restaurants eagerly awaiting the influx of visitors to our shores.
Although many restaurants will be offering ‘special and enhanced’ menus, inevitably with inflated prices, it will be business as usual for the restaurants of Constantia Uitsig. In recognition of the unwavering loyalty regulars have shown to La Colombe, Constantia Uitsig Restaurant and River Café, each of these popular eateries will be offering their superb and affordable Winter Menus between May and September 2010.
“Any chef will tell you it’s the regulars that keep you going in the leaner months and although the World Cup is likely to bring more diners to our door this year, we are adamant that we want to honour our loyal diners with value-for-money meals to remember”, says Luke Dale-Roberts, executive chef at La Colombe and Eat Out Restaurant of the Year for the past two years.
A three or four-course lunch or dinner (with a carafe of wine of course) will be on offer at River Café for an impressive R195 or R225 respectively. River Café patrons will be delighted to note that one child per dining adult eats absolutely free this winter and in addition, the popular laidback eatery will be offering a 20% discount on table of 10 or more for breakfast bookings.
With offerings such as these, Constantia Uitsig Estate is likely to be one of Cape Town’s best value-for-money dining destinations this winter.
The Winter Menus will be available from 01 May until 30 September 2010, with the exception of Sundays.
Annual Closure - 24 April - 08 May
Expires : 30 September 2010
